Car Sharing Zone Lookup Guide
What is Car Sharing Zone Lookup?
The Car Sharing Zone Lookup is a location-based search tool that helps users find SOCAR and GreenCar car-sharing parking zones (also called depots or stations) across South Korea. Car sharing is a transportation model where vehicles are available for short-term rental, typically by the hour or day, from designated parking locations throughout a city. Unlike traditional car rental, which requires visiting a rental office and completing lengthy paperwork, car sharing allows users to reserve, unlock, and return vehicles through a smartphone app at self-service zones. This tool uses the Car Sharing Information API provided by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport through the TAGO (Transport Information Integrated Operation) system on data.go.kr. It provides three search methods — by zone name, by address, and by proximity to your current location — and displays results both on an interactive Naver Map and in a scrollable list. Car sharing has become an increasingly popular alternative to car ownership in Korea, particularly in urban areas where parking is scarce and expensive. It is ideal for occasional drivers who do not need a car daily, travelers exploring a new city, or households considering reducing the number of vehicles they own.
How to use
The tool offers three search tabs, each optimized for a different use case:
Tab 1 — Name Search: Enter a zone name or landmark to find nearby car-sharing stations. This is useful when you know the general area — for example, entering 'Gangnam Station' will find all car-sharing zones near Gangnam Station. Enter partial names or well-known landmarks (subway stations, universities, shopping centers) for the best results.
Tab 2 — Address Search: Enter a full or partial address to find zones in that area. For example, entering 'Seoul Gangnam-gu' will return all zones registered in the Gangnam district. This is useful when you know the neighborhood but not specific zone names, or when planning ahead for a trip to a specific area.
Tab 3 — Nearby Search: Uses your device's GPS to find car-sharing zones within a selected radius (2 km, 5 km, or 10 km) of your current location. This is the fastest option when you need a car right now and want to find the closest available zone. If location access is not available, the search defaults to Seoul City Hall area.
For all search methods:
- Results appear as markers on the Naver Map and as items in a list below the map
- Click a map marker to see the zone name, service provider (SOCAR/GreenCar), and address
- Click a list item to center the map on that zone
- The result count shows the total number of zones found
Tip: Start with a broader search (larger radius or general area name) and narrow down from the results. Zone availability in the API does not guarantee vehicle availability — always confirm through the respective service app before traveling to a zone.

Good to Know
This tool shows zone locations only — it does not show real-time vehicle availability. A zone appearing in the search results means a car-sharing station exists at that location, but there may not be a vehicle currently available. Always check the SOCAR or GreenCar app to verify vehicle availability and make your reservation before traveling to a zone.
SOCAR and GreenCar zones have different geographic strengths. SOCAR dominates in Seoul and the Seoul metropolitan area (Gyeonggi-do, Incheon), with particularly dense coverage near subway stations and commercial districts. GreenCar, backed by Lotte Rental, has broader nationwide coverage and may be the better option in smaller cities, tourist destinations, and areas outside the capital region. If searching in Seoul, you will likely find both services; outside Seoul, GreenCar may have more options.
Zone locations can change over time. Parking contracts expire, new zones are added, and existing zones may relocate. The TAGO API is updated periodically but may not reflect the very latest changes. If you plan to use a specific zone for the first time, verify its current status in the service provider's app.
For the best nearby search results on mobile, ensure your GPS is enabled and you are outdoors or near a window. Indoor GPS signals can be weak, leading to inaccurate location detection. If your location appears wrong, use the name or address search tabs instead.
Car sharing is most cost-effective for short trips under 6-8 hours. For longer periods or multi-day trips, compare car-sharing rates with traditional car rental services, which may offer better daily rates. However, car sharing has the advantage of no pickup/return office visits and much more flexible timing.
Before your first car-sharing experience, complete the registration process on the SOCAR or GreenCar app in advance. Registration requires a valid Korean driver's license, a selfie for identity verification, and a linked payment method. The verification process can take 30 minutes to several hours, so do not wait until you need a car to register.
Pay attention to the fuel policy. Most car-sharing vehicles should be returned with at least the same fuel level as when you picked them up. Some services offer fuel credits or reimbursement if you refuel during your rental. Check the specific policy in the app to avoid extra charges.
