Weight Converter Guide
What is the Weight Converter?
The Weight Converter is a tool that converts between different weight (mass) measurement units. It supports three conversion tabs: kg↔lb (pounds), g↔oz (ounces), and geun↔kg (Korean traditional unit).
The kilogram is the base unit of mass in the International System of Units (SI) and is used in most countries worldwide. The pound (lb) and ounce (oz) are imperial/US customary units still commonly used in the United States, UK (informally), and a few other countries.
The geun (근) is a traditional Korean unit of weight equal to 600 grams, still widely used in Korean markets for buying meat, vegetables, and other food items. When shopping at traditional markets in Korea, you'll often see prices listed per geun rather than per kilogram.
Understanding weight conversions is essential for international cooking (recipe measurements), shipping and logistics (package weight limits), fitness (body weight and gym weights), and everyday shopping. The converter provides instant bidirectional conversion with precise results for practical use.
How to Use
1. Select a conversion tab.
• kg ↔ lb: Convert between kilograms and pounds. Used for body weight, shipping, groceries.
• g ↔ oz: Convert between grams and ounces. Common in cooking, jewelry, small items.
• 근(geun) ↔ kg: Convert between Korean geun and kilograms. Essential for Korean market shopping.
2. Enter a value in either field.
Type a number in the left or right input field. The conversion is calculated instantly.
3. Read the converted result.
The other field displays the converted value automatically.
Common Examples:
• Body weight: 70 kg = 154.32 lb
• Steak: 300 g = 10.58 oz
• Market shopping: 1근 = 600 g = 0.6 kg
• Luggage limit: 23 kg = 50.71 lb
• Gym plate: 45 lb = 20.41 kg
Tip: In Korean markets, 1근 of meat is 600g, but 1근 of vegetables or fruit may sometimes refer to 400g at some vendors. This converter uses the standard 600g definition.
Conversion Formulas
■ Kilograms ↔ Pounds
1 pound (lb) = 0.45359237 kg (exact)
1 kg = 2.20462 lb
Formula: lb = kg × 2.20462
Formula: kg = lb × 0.45359237
Example: 80 kg = 80 × 2.20462 = 176.37 lb
Example: 150 lb = 150 × 0.45359 = 68.04 kg
■ Grams ↔ Ounces
1 ounce (oz) = 28.349523 g
1 g = 0.035274 oz
Formula: oz = g × 0.035274
Formula: g = oz × 28.349523
Example: 250 g = 250 × 0.035274 = 8.82 oz
Example: 16 oz (1 lb) = 16 × 28.3495 = 453.59 g
■ Geun ↔ Kilograms
1 근 (geun) = 600 g = 0.6 kg
1 kg = 1.6667 근
Formula: kg = geun × 0.6
Formula: geun = kg ÷ 0.6
Example: 2 근 = 2 × 0.6 = 1.2 kg
Example: 1 kg = 1 ÷ 0.6 = 1.667 근
■ Quick Reference Table
1 oz = 28.35 g | 1 lb = 453.59 g | 1 lb = 16 oz
1 kg = 2.205 lb | 1 kg = 35.274 oz | 1 근 = 600 g
1 stone = 6.35 kg = 14 lb (used in UK for body weight)
1 metric ton = 1,000 kg = 2,204.62 lb
■ Troy vs Avoirdupois
For precious metals: 1 troy oz = 31.1035 g (not 28.35 g)
Gold/silver prices are quoted per troy ounce.
Helpful Tips
■ Quick Mental Conversions
• kg to lb: Double and add 10%. 70 kg → 140 + 14 = 154 lb (actual: 154.3)
• lb to kg: Halve and subtract 10%. 150 lb → 75 - 7.5 = 67.5 kg (actual: 68.0)
• 근 to kg: Multiply by 0.6. 5근 = 3 kg
■ Common Reference Weights
• Newborn baby: 3-3.5 kg (6.6-7.7 lb)
• Average adult male: 70-80 kg (154-176 lb)
• Carry-on luggage limit: 7-10 kg (15-22 lb)
• Checked luggage limit: 23 kg (50.7 lb) or 32 kg (70.5 lb)

• 1관 (gwan) = 16근 = 9.6 kg (traditional larger unit)
■ Cooking Conversions
• Butter: 1 cup = 227 g = 8 oz = 2 sticks
• Flour: 1 cup ≈ 120-130 g
• Sugar: 1 cup ≈ 200 g
• When following American recipes, use oz→g conversion
■ Common Mistakes
• Don't confuse fluid ounces (volume) with ounces (weight)
• Troy ounces (31.1g) for gold ≠ regular ounces (28.35g)
• In UK, body weight is often given in 'stone' (1 stone = 14 lb = 6.35 kg)
